XREAL’s Project Aura came out of Google I/O with rave reviews. The wired Android XR glasses combine a 70-degree optical see-through display, Gemini support and XREAL’s spatial hardware, giving buyers a clearer view of where lightweight XR could fit around work, training, design and field support.
Focusing on practicality and usability, the company said:
“Project Aura represents a major step forward in making XR experiences practical, lightweight, and accessible for everyday users and developers alike.
“Project Aura is no longer just a vision of the future, it’s real, developers are building for it today, and it’s coming globally in 2026.”
Project Aura Got The Reaction XREAL Needed
Aura wasn’t just a concept or flashy demo at Google I/O – lucky attendees could try the highly anticipated XR glasses.
It’s important that XR glasses ‘put their money where the mouth is’, because in the past, after excellent demos, they’ve been plagued with issues like narrow fields of view, awkward interaction models and products that look better than they feel on someone’s face.
The early reaction around Project Aura has been notably positive among commentators and industry figures alike.
And whilst that doesn’t make Aura a finished workplace product. It does add another real contender to a category that is flourishing in front of our eyes.

The Specifications That Have People Talking
The headline spec is the 70-degree field of view.
XREAL says Project Aura is its first tethered XR glasses built with Google for Android XR, using the company’s X1S spatial computing chip and a 70-degree optical see-through display. The device is wired, with XREAL also describing a split-compute design where the glasses connect to a tethered puck that holds the main compute and battery.
Aura is not trying to hide all of the compute inside the frame, which usually means compromises on weight, thermals, battery life or visual performance. The puck makes the product less invisible than pure smart glasses, but it also gives XREAL more room to chase a better visual XR experience.
Aura has been described as ‘a visual XR device’ rather than true smart glasses, like Google and Samsung’s audio-first ones.
That’s probably fair enough. Audio glasses are about quick AI help, but Aura is more about visual work: screens, maps, media, spatial apps, 3D content and Android XR experiences with more room to breathe.
Where Enterprise Buyers Could Use Project Aura…
XREAL says the Google I/O demos included immersive Google Maps, YouTube 180 and 360-degree VR video, 2D and 3D video, a WebXR 3D painting app built with Gemini, DisplayPort-in laptop connection, integrated Gemini support and auto-spatialization.
Great news for potential enterprise buyers; the list points to work people already recognise. Laptop connection is the easiest example: private screens, multi-display setups and portable workspaces for travelling workers, engineers, field teams and executives.

Aura has more visual room than audio-first smart glasses, without pushing users into a full mixed-reality headset. That middle ground gives buyers a different option: enough display space for spatial content, 3D media and Android XR apps, while staying closer to eyewear than a bulky headset.
The most plausible B2B uses are fairly clear:
- Portable workspaces: private virtual screens, multi-display setups and laptop extension
- Training previews: lighter access to immersive content before full VR or MR sessions
- Design and media review: 2D, 3D and spatial content without a dedicated headset setup
- Field support: visual instructions, remote guidance, diagrams and checklists
- Digital twins and simulation: 3D models, maps and operational environments in a wearable form factor
- Developer testing: Android XR apps built for glasses before the wider device ecosystem matures
These are practical because they already match the hardware: more visual than smart glasses, less enclosed than a headset, and easy to connect to work people already do.
…But Buyers Will Still Need The Boring Details
The strong hands-on reaction is encouraging, but Aura still needs the usual workplace answers.
Buyers will need detail on price, battery life, weight, prescription support, field durability, device management, app approval, data capture, support model and how the tethered puck works in normal working conditions.
There is also a governance layer. Android XR glasses with displays, spatial apps, cameras, sensors and Gemini support will need clear privacy controls, IT policy support and rules for where the devices can be used.
That is where Project Aura has to be judged differently from a consumer gadget. A good demo and a wider field of view help, but workplace adoption usually comes down to manageability, safety, workflow fit and support. The same questions already apply to smart glasses pilots across enterprise settings.
