Varjo’s latest Ukraine deal isn’t just a defence story. It’s a sign that mixed reality immersive training is becoming serious operational infrastructure, and businesses with physical training demands should pay attention.
The company says it is supplying 39 Mixed Reality (MR) systems for a virtual training programme supporting the Ukrainian Armed Forces, with the first rollout funded through Norway’s Nansen Program and the wider project valued at NOK 82.5 million, or about €7.2 million. The training covers familiarisation, procedures, and maintenance across military vehicles.
But the more important story is what that says about MR as a training technology.
Training-Intensive Industries Would be Remiss to Ignore Mixed Reality
When a military force under active pressure is investing in immersive simulation, it is not because mixed reality looks futuristic. It is because the training problem is real. According to Varjo, Ukrainian personnel often cannot access the actual vehicles they need to learn on because those assets are needed elsewhere. MR becomes the substitute for scarce, expensive, or operationally unavailable equipment. That turns immersive tech from an innovation project into infrastructure.
Varjo CEO Timo Toikkanen put it plainly:
“XR training is solving a real operational challenge in Ukraine.”
That’s the real headline.
It is also the part businesses should pay attention to. Because once mixed reality is framed as a solution to an operational challenge, the commercial use cases get easier to spot. Aviation, rail, utilities, healthcare, heavy manufacturing, mining, construction, emergency response, logistics, and complex field service all face versions of the same problem: training people on high-value equipment or high-risk procedures is expensive, slow, and sometimes dangerous.
Varjo’s announcement matters because it shows Mmixed reality being trusted in exactly that kind of environment.
If a military environment can justify mixed reality on the basis of readiness, safety, and speed, then plenty of civilian industries should stop treating immersive training as a novelty. They should be asking a more useful question: where could simulation reduce errors, shorten ramp-up time, or make scarce assets less of a bottleneck? That is a much stronger business conversation than “is VR/,MR interesting?” It’s a conversation about cost, competence, and resilience.
Is the ROI there? PWC Says Yes
The ROI side is not hypothetical either. PwC’s research on VR/MR training found that learners trained in VR completed training four times faster than in the classroom, and that VR becomes more cost-effective as scale increases. The study says VR/MR training hits cost parity with classroom training at 375 learners, parity with e-learning at 1,950 learners, and at 3,000 learners becomes 52% less expensive than classroom learning.
PwC summed up the business case this way:
“V-learning is the most cost-effective way of learning when it’s done on a large scale.“
That is the part many business leaders still underestimate.
XR does not need to replace every form of training to matter. It only needs to outperform traditional methods where physical access is limited, mistakes are costly, or repetition is essential. In those environments, immersive training can move quickly from “nice to have” to “hard to ignore.” PwC also concluded that VR training is ready to be deployed at scale in both the private and public sectors.
Varjo’s Ukraine deployment is extreme by nature. That is exactly why it is such a strong signal. Military buyers do not adopt mixed reality technology because it sounds impressive in a keynote, they adopt it because it solves a serious problem.
Business leaders with similarly intense training demands should sit up and take notice.
