Google I/O Day One: Gemini Agents, Android XR Glasses And Project Aura Set The Tone

Google I/O Day One was a lot more than another “AI everywhere” keynote. Google put Gemini agents into Search, shopping, Android and the Gemini app, while Android XR glasses, XREAL’s Project Aura and a new developer programme gave XR a much clearer role in the company’s next platform push.

Google Comes Out Swinging On AI

Google I/O Day One had the usual keynote sprawl, but the direction was pretty clear: Gemini is being pushed deeper into products, devices and developer tools, with agents sitting at the centre of the whole thing.

Google announced two new models, Gemini Omni and Gemini 3.5, as part of its I/O 2026 update. Gemini Omni is built around multimodal creation and editing, starting with video. Gemini 3.5 is framed around agentic workflows, with Google pitching it as a model designed for action rather than static responses.

That “action” theme came up again and again.

Google says Spark is a cloud-based agent that can keep working in the background, connect with Workspace tools such as Gmail, Docs and Slides, and use new MCP connections with partners including Canva, OpenTable and Instacart.

Search is getting agents too. Google said information agents will work in the background to find information and help users act on it, while Search will also build custom experiences, interactive visuals, dashboards and trackers for more involved tasks.

Shopping got the agent treatment through Universal Cart, a new Google shopping layer rolling out across Search and the Gemini app in the U.S. this summer, with YouTube and Gmail to follow.

Visual Box: Google I/O Day One In Five Moves

  • Gemini Omni and Gemini 3.5 were announced
  • Gemini Spark brings a 24/7 agent into the Gemini app
  • Search is getting information agents, generative interfaces and persistent trackers
  • Universal Cart pushes Google further into agentic shopping
  • Android XR glasses and Project Aura put Gemini into wearable and spatial hardware

Android XR Glasses Are Back On The Calendar

One of the most anticipated XR updates came through Google’s intelligent eyewear announcement.

Google says Android XR audio glasses are launching first, coming later this fall. Display glasses are also still part of the roadmap, with in-lens information for users who need visual prompts rather than spoken help.

The first designs are coming from Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, with Samsung and Qualcomm tied into the Android XR platform. Google says users will be able to access Gemini by saying “Hey Google” or tapping the side of the frame.

The feature list is deliberately everyday: directions, texts, calls, message summaries, music, photos, videos, translation, questions about what the user is seeing, and app actions through services such as Uber and Mondly.

That’s a smart first lane for glasses. Google isn’t asking the market to buy into full spatial computing from day one. It’s starting with moments people already understand: finding a route, sending a message, translating a sign, taking a photo, getting a prompt without reaching for a phone.

Warby Parker has also launched its own intelligent eyewear page, describing the project as a collaboration with Google and Samsung, designed for all-day wear and built with multimodal AI capabilities.

Project Aura Opens Up The Immersive Channel

Google’s glasses update covered the everyday AI eyewear lane, but XREAL’s Project Aura brought more of the XR fun.

XREAL and Google showed Project Aura at I/O, describing it as upcoming wired XR glasses arriving globally in 2026.

The demo list was much more visual: immersive Google Maps, YouTube 180 and 360-degree VR video, 2D and 3D video, a WebXR 3D painting app built with Gemini, DisplayPort-in laptop connection, integrated Gemini support and auto-spatialization.

This gives Android XR two different jobs. Audio glasses are aimed at lightweight, all-day AI help. Project Aura gives developers a more spatial target for media, productivity, creative tools, gaming, laptop extension and immersive apps.

It also keeps Android XR from being boxed into a single device type. Google now has audio eyewear, future display eyewear, wired XR glasses and headsets all sitting under the same platform banner.

Android XR Now Has To Survive The Workplace Test

Google and XREAL have opened applications for the Android XR Developer Catalyst Program, with selected developers offered early access to hardware development kits, technical support and possible non-recoupable grants. Android XR Developer Preview 4 also landed at I/O, adding support for cross-device development across headsets, wired XR glasses, audio glasses and display glasses.

Glasses with cameras, microphones and Gemini assistance will face tougher checks in workplaces than they will in consumer demos.

Buyers will want to know how Android XR glasses are managed, how apps are approved, what data is captured, where that data goes, how bystanders are protected, and whether the hardware can survive normal working conditions.

Google put plenty on the board at I/O Day One. Gemini agents are moving into Search, shopping, Android and the Gemini app. Android XR glasses now have a fall launch window. Project Aura gives the platform a richer spatial hardware path. The Catalyst Program gives developers a route into early hardware and tooling.

Android XR now looks more tangible. The next test is whether Google, Samsung, Qualcomm, XREAL and the eyewear partners can turn that roadmap into devices people wear, apps developers build, and workflows buyers can justify.

We can’t wait for Day Two!
