Smart glasses are getting easier to take seriously, but that doesn’t mean every smart glasses pilot deserves a budget. The category is clearly moving forward, especially in warehousing, logistics and other hands-busy environments, yet buyers still need to separate a genuinely useful operational tool from a shiny bit of kit looking for a problem to solve.

That’s the real challenge. By the time a smart glasses pilot reaches the budget conversation, the technology is rarely the only issue. The bigger question is whether there’s a clear workflow, a realistic user need, and a decent chance the thing will still look useful once the novelty wears off.

What Job Is This Actually Supposed to Improve?

The first question is the most obvious one, and it’s still the one people manage to dodge: what job is this supposed to improve?

If the answer is vague, the pilot is already in trouble. “Innovation”, “future readiness” and “exploring wearable computing” all sound fine in a meeting, but they’re not strong enough reasons to put devices on people’s faces. Buyers should be looking for a specific workflow where hands-free access to information, guided steps, remote support, visual confirmation or real-time prompts could make work easier, faster, safer or more consistent.

That’s why smart glasses tend to make more sense in places like warehousing, picking, field service, inspections and some healthcare settings than they do in generic office use. The more physical the work, the more awkward it is to keep stopping and reaching for another screen, and the easier it becomes to see the value of something that sits in the line of sight.

Is the User Need Strong Enough to Justify the Device?

The second question is simple: does the wearer actually need this, or are you forcing the technology into the workflow because it looks interesting?

This is where quite a few pilots wobble. A device can be clever and still not be necessary. If workers can already do the task just as easily with a phone, tablet or existing handheld system, smart glasses may struggle to justify themselves. Not because the technology is bad, but because the improvement is too marginal.

The stronger pilots are usually the ones where the device solves an irritation that people genuinely feel. Maybe workers need information while keeping both hands free. That could be pick speed, error reduction, training time, task completion time, support-call efficiency, downtime, compliance, or worker confidence in a new process.   • How are they updated?

Those questions are less glamorous than the product video, but they’re usually much closer to the truth of whether the pilot can scale. Smart glasses are no longer just a futuristic talking point, and the recent momentum in frontline environments makes that harder to dismiss. But buyers still shouldn’t start with the device, they should start with the problem.
